Tinjan has always been a border town. Attinianum guarded the frontiers of Poreč's ager) from the poorly Roman peninsula interior and keeping an eye on the road to Tarsatica during the Roman period. It was one of Majnard Črnogradski's holdings in Pazin during the Middle Ages, and through a marriage connection, it came under the authority of the Gorica earls.
